Why is Data Deduplication such a hot topic?

To put it simply, people at the sharp end of managing IT are having to think about how they use Data storage space. The current economic uncertainty is putting pressure on budgets everywhere, so making better use of space that is currently being used inefficiently is one way of making a saving… Alternatively buying new intelligent storage that allows you to deduplicate at the hardware level is another way of making that new storage project pay for itself quicker.

For example:
Symantec’s Enterprise Vault application is well known as an archiving and compliancy tool and has been in the leader and visionary square of Gartners Magic Quadrant report for some four years running. No mean feat considering the number of rival applications snapping at its heals.

One aspect of this product that is often overlooked as a “nice to have” is the de-duplication ability that is inherent to the file and mail archiving modules. It is often the case that over 30% of storage consumption is simply duplicate copies of files created by users…. (For instance, that 5MB presentation that the sales team keep making small changes to and then emailing out to each other! Every business has the same issue). Clawing this back by implementing an archiving policy helps you also take pressure off your mail & File servers as well as your backup solution. If you can extend the life of these systems by 12months it might just make this years budget workable?

The second aspect is when you are faced with a storage upgrade project that you know is underfunded (since the board made that last budget cut). You can try and limp on with your existing legacy kit and cross your fingers…. Or you can seek out a Vendor that can sell you less physical storage yet still meet your requirements. NetApp are offering exactly this with some fantastic single instancing tools based on their propriety WAFL file system. If your file storage is very duplicated then they are claiming savings of up to 95%. There is a great online tool for predicting the likely savings here…. Give it a try, if you like what you see then contact our NetApp sales team for further advice.

So to summarize:
Deduplication is a hot topic because money is tight and everyone is looking to stretch their budget this year.
If you have existing storage and are running short or are finding that your backups and mail servers are struggling then a good archiving tool with application driven single instancing might be the answer to all your woes.
If you are lucky enough to have some budget to spend on replacing your storage this year then looking at NetApp’s Single Instance technology could well make your investment pay for itself a whole lot faster.

LETN’s professinal services team are assisting our clients with their deduplication needs, if you think you could benefit from this concept then give us a call on 01189070070 we’ll be happy to discuss your requirements and give you an honest opinion on whether the above technology is right for you.

Responding to Customer Demand, VMware and SAP Establish Global Technology Partnership; VMware Infrastructure Supports SAP® Solutions with Both Windows and Linux on Industry-standard Hardware
PALO ALTO, Calif., December 12, 2007 — VMware, Inc., the virtualization software leader, today announced that SAP AG will provide immediate full support to its solutions in 64-bit Windows- and Linux-based production environments running on VMware ESX Server. Servers from Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, IBM and Sun have achieved hardware platform certification for SAP® solutions running on Windows and Linux with VMware ESX Server, a component of the VMware Infrastructure software suite. VMware Infrastructure supports SAP solutions with both Windows and Linux on industry-standard hardware. SAP and VMware will assist joint customers in cooperative support services and problem resolution, backed by a global technology partnership agreement and dedicated support staffing.

“There has been overwhelming customer demand for SAP and VMware solutions. Support of SAP solutions on VMware ESX Server means customers can extend the numerous benefits of infrastructure virtualization to the business-critical and functionally rich SAP solutions in their IT environments,” said Brian Byun, vice president of global partners and solutions at VMware. “This support reflects the increasingly productive relationship between SAP and VMware, and it provides a sought-after solution for customers looking to combine the powerful process management capabilities of SAP solutions with the robust data center management and cost-saving features of VMware Infrastructure.”

SAP solutions enable organizations of all sizes to manage business-critical processes using an enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) to quickly translate customer signals into operational response, respond faster to business and market changes, and provide built-in application integration. Customers who rely on SAP solutions to keep their businesses moving forward can deploy VMware ESX Server with SAP support for all stages of the software lifecycle from development and test to production.

VMware Infrastructure allows customers to turn industry-standard hardware into OS- and hardware-agnostic enterprise-class virtual infrastructure where entire server, storage and network farms can be managed as a shared utility and dynamically allocated to different business units or projects. This gives IT decision makers the ability to combat the continually escalating data center infrastructure and administrative costs incurred from hardware acquisition, management, power and cooling, real estate and disaster recovery; transform IT service levels; and simplify and automate their IT infrastructure.

“VMware Infrastructure has many benefits for hosted environments,” said Benno Weidmann, vice president of hosting infrastructure management at SAP Hosting. “We’ve been able to automate internal business processes and increase service levels to internal customers. In addition, we have reduced costs with consolidation and automation of system deployment, as well as greatly reduced the required hardware for internal training and development systems. Altogether, virtualization helps us to lower costs, develop and automate user services, better manage hardware and software lifecycles, and improve production and capacity planning across a
more unified infrastructure.”

Customers that have been using VMware ESX Server with SAP solutions are successfully leveraging the benefits of virtualization for mission-critical SAP workloads. Support from SAP will enable customers to further extend the value of running SAP solutions on their virtualized infrastructures.

By supporting its applications in production environments running on VMware ESX Server, SAP enables its customers to capitalize on the robust benefits of infrastructure virtualization, including:

Improved data center automation and management: Customers can more easily manage IT resources to boost performance of mission-critical SAP solution-based workloads

Business continuity and data protection: VMware Infrastructure reduces downtime by automatically restarting virtual machines on different physical servers in the event of hardware failure, and the suite provides cost-effective, hardware-independent disaster recovery

Reduced server sprawl: Customers can run SAP application layers in virtual machines that are consolidated onto fewer, highly scalable and reliable enterprise servers, enabling a smaller data-center footprint and lowering hardware costs

Quick and easy server provisioning: New virtualized servers can be provisioned and new SAP solution-based environments can be set up in minutes instead of the hours or days it can take to acquire and set up new hardware

In recent years there has been much talk about disasters, both abroad and at home businesses are having to look at planning for the worst. Large companies have to look at protecting a sprawling infrastruture that is complex and highly integrated. Smaller companies are being placed under pressure by their customers to provide evidence that they have planned for and can survive a disaster, not to mentin the horror inducing figures casually thrown around by the press on how many small businesses fail after suffering data loss or business interuption.

In short businesses of all sizes are being forced to take a serious look at their reliance on technology, asking questions like what happens if the office isn’t here tomorrow? or is here but under three feet of water? how long will our clients wait for us to recover before they look elsewhere?

LETN have developed a solution that scales with our wide variety of clients, providing a cost effective platform which we can securely replicate your critical business systems to. In the event you suffer a disaster we publish your systems securely via Cisco Virtual Private Network connections so your employees can access them from home or a temporary office. Your business is back up and running in a few hours and continues to trade while you recover.

Everyones talking about it, some are doing it but many are still sceptical of the value of virtualization…

LETN’s Service Delivery Manger states the facts as they are today below…

“Being responsible for the day to day running of our managed service customers critical systems we do not recommend change lightly. It was therefore a must for LETN to rigorously test the virtualization concept with some of our customers that hit their hardware hard on a regular basis.
At first glance there are savings to be made with consolidation (something for the FD to smile about) by running more “virtual” servers on a single physical server. This has some obvious benefits in utilization (your money works harder) space, power and heat reduction. There is an argument that it is unwise to put all your eggs in one basket but our tests show that by virtualizing critical servers we are able to make them very portable(see LETN’s RDRS service for more information on this).
Failed hardware no longer means a time consuming server rebuild from scratch with lengthy tape restores, a replacement server can be loaded with VM Ware very quickly and the backup copy of the Virtual Server simply pushed back and restarted. The Enterprise version of ESX Server from VM Ware has some High Availability features that allows for this to be automated when multiple physical servers are present effectively delivering cheap business continuity.
All of the benefits we have demonstrated in our tests also appear to be very scalable with strong arguments for SME’s and large Corporate’s alike. The SME benefits from cost effective use of their hardware and a cheap business continuity solution. For businesses with large server estates the savings can quickly scale up into some very attractive numbers, especially since Collocation space and power is rising in cost so quickly.
To summarize, I can see that pretty much every business will see some benefit from virtualization, with some reaping large cost savings, others implementing cost effective business continuity or a blend of both. It is therefore something that should be on the agenda for everyone’s 2008 budgets.”

HP Launch new C3000 "Shorty" Blade Enclosure

What is it?
A BladeSystem enclosure consolidates the moving parts of a traditional infrastructure – cables, power supplies and fans, networking, redundancy and more – making the whole infrastructure easier to manage.

The HP BladeSystem c3000 is built exclusively for small businesses with big computing and data protection needs. It is a smaller versatile design of the c7000 and is ideal for small sites like business offices or branch locations that only need four to eight servers, storage blades or integrity blades at a time.

When is the c3000 the right choice?

If you only need 3 to 8 servers or storage components at a time

If your server room only supports low-line outlets, 110v for example

If your server room has limited air conditioning

What’s in it for your budget?
The HP BladeSystem c-Class has set the blade standard. The c3000 enclosure is simply a better fit for smaller environments. Some of the benefits are:

Reduced Costs…

Simplification…

Future Growth…

Application availability…

In January 2004 IEEE announced that it had formed a new 802.11 Task Group (TGn) to develop a new amendment to the 802.11 standard for wireless local-area networks. The real data throughput is estimated to reach a theoretical 540 Mbps (which may require an even higher raw data rate at the physical layer), and should be up to 100 times faster than 802.11b, and well over 10 times faster than 802.11a or 802.11g. It is projected that 802.11n will also offer a better operating distance than current networks.

802.11n builds upon previous 802.11 standards by adding MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output). MIMO uses multiple transmitter and receiver antennas to allow for increased data throughput through spatial multiplexing and increased range by exploiting the spatial diversity, perhaps through coding schemes like Alamouti coding.

On May 2, 2006, the IEEE 802.11 Working Group voted not to forward Draft 1.0 of the proposed 802.11n standard for a sponsor ballot. Only 46.6% voted to accept the proposal. To proceed to the next step in the IEEE process, a majority vote of 75% is required. This letter ballot also generated approximately 12000 comments—much more than anticipated.

According to the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Project Timelines, the 802.11n standard is not due for final approval until July 2007.
